The museum is run on a seasonal basis from April 1 to October 15 plus special events. Normally it is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 AM until 4 PM, but a recent shortage of volunteers has limited opening to Thursday thru Saturday, but if workers are present on other days including the off-season, most of the time they can be accommodated. Often visits can be arranged ahead of time by calling (509) 854-4159 to speak to Doug.
The 1911 depot/museum was in very poor condition when the museum was founded in 1989. It has undergone a multiyear restoration effort and is now one of the most original Northern Pacific depots. Much of the original equipment went home with employees when the depot was boarded up in the early 1980’s. Much of that original equipment has returned after the museum opened. Our restoration goals were to restore as much as possible to what it was like in the early 20th century.
The yard includes memorabilia from the old North Coast Limited along with 4 of the original streamlined NCL passenger cars and the F-9 cab of one of the locomotives that pulled it. A number of early freight cars are on site and as restoration proceeds, loads are being added to show the importance of the railroad to the community. The museum also includes various pieces of maintenance of way equipment. Two original Northern Pacific steam engines are on site, one nearly restored and soon to be ready for operation
