In January 2019 we were notified that a lot of retired Amtrak diner cars were up for bid. A delegation went to Beech Grove, Indiana to view the cars that were for sale. The Amtrak 8509, formerly NP 460 was chosen as it was the most original of the 4 ex-NP diners available. The downside was the original trucks had been removed and the shop trucks were not BNSF certifiable. We won the bid and have been searching for new trucks to bring this diner home. Fortunately we have the proper certified trucks on the NP 581 when it was brought to the museum last year. but they needed to be rebuilt before being sent back to Beech Grove to be remounted on the NP 460. Dennis Lee, David Pankey and David Grillo have donated much of their time to make these trucks happen. John Clark will install the new trucks in Indiana so that by spring 2020 we can expect to see our new diner car to arrive.
The pictures below were taken by Dave Grillo and Doug Shearer when they went to Beech Grove to bid on the cars.
