Rock lined

Looking east from Hy. 14

The Drano Tunnel is the shortest of all the bores on the SP&S Gorge line. One would scratch their head and wonder if such could be daylighted to avoid the cost of maintenance on a tunnel. The rock is stable enough that it did not need cement to encase against falling rock. So for all purposes the cost of “daylighting” (Railroad slang for blowing up the tunnel to make it into merely just a cut.) is not justified.
