The steam dome is where the steam is allowed to collect and separate from the water below. It is here that the throttle valve is located to meter and allow the desired “saturated steam” to enter toward the pistons. We discovered that somewhere in time the actual dome had been repaired and the weld was not done by a “certified steam boiler welder”, nor was the weld certified, or for that factor the repair never appeared in any maintenance log. The Federal Railway Administration (FRA) was adamant that the patch either be ground out and welded by a boiler certified welder……or worse, totally replaced. We opted for the later

But persistence paid off
